Would you put up with terrible bad manners for lots of money (at work)?

In the past, I worked for a real tyrant who loved to yell and scream at his employees. He also loved using psychological games to mess his staff’s minds up and put us off balance. We would be made to feel small by embarrassed stares, rolling eyes, haughty laughs- when he rejected our ideas, long waits in the outer office when we had scheduled meetings, being forced to “cool our heals” in meetings while he accepted long personal phone calls, and harsh overly subjective performance appraisals. This was just the start of it.
Why did we put up with all this? Money, Money, Money! We were paid lots of money, far more than what the traditional market paid for jobs such as ours. He told us that he paid very well because the business required only the best employees. So he must have had some respect for us and few of us were ever fired. The power of the man’s personality made us treat him to his face like a God. He just demanded respect.
Would you work in a Devil Wears Prada type setting for lots of money?
To put up with the abuse I was paid twice what other people in other companies would be paid for similar work. But the abuse was part of our pay.

Sexual harassment at work?

Hi,

I am facing this peculiar problem-I joined a well-known foreign bank after finishing my MBA from one of the most prestigious institutes.

When I joined my bank around 2 years back, my boss proposed to marry me and I found it very hideous because of the age gap and I found it pretty unethical. Hence, I humbly refused his proposal and found it really impractical for anyone to do so.

Eversince, he has been downgrading my appraisals and giving the perception that am a non-performer to the senior management.
I have tried to work really hard and made good reputation amongst other business partners as well but somehow, he has never left a chance to humiliate me for non-performance or try to give wrong feedback to everyone around.

I had complaint to his boss hoping that things would get sorted but she insisted I quit my job or find another place to go.

His boss says that there has been lot of perception built up already amongst the senior management that I like to gossip.

On the ground, he has been promoting a couple of girls who are half as qualified as me but now are being given opportunity to outshine as they spend time at his house and have personal connections with him.

It seems really unfair that after coming from such a good educational background, I am facing a term “non-performer” in my appraisals while there are people who are following wrong means and rising higher.

At this point, am just trying to know what should be my course of action. Pls advise!

For Christians: How do you deal with conflict at work?

…And what would you do in my situation:

I recently had my appraisal, and my boss told me that someone had complained to him about me. I used to get along well with her, so I feel so shocked that someone could be so nice on the surface and then tell lies about me behind my back. I am lucky in the sense that he obviously doesn’t believe her and even told me her name so I can speak to her myself. I hate conflict, so I dread having to do that, but he asked me to. Also, I have to work with her again afterwards. It upsets me so that I’m sleeping badly.

How would you deal with it as a Christian?

Coworker is “all business” at work, should that be held against her?

A lady at work (Jane) who works as an Administrative Assistant will not talk to anyone unless it is for a work related issue. When the rest of the “girls” she works with are chatting during slow periods, if Jane has nothing to do she will spend her time on line or just sit there. She will not exchange non work related conversation with anyone under any circumstances.

Her work performance, other than that is excellent.

When she got her performance appraisal she was marked down for being socially isolated from her coworkers. She was told that business is based on relationships and being totally socially isolated will hurt her ability to work with people. She strongly disagrees. Your opinion.

Her boss is a friend of mine and discussed it with me.
When people come to her about work issues she is unsmiling but polite. but no smiles etc.

My friend maybe should have not discussed it with her but did talk to a variety of management experts who said that yes, business is based on relationships and to move ahead one needs to be friendly with their coworkers to gain coorporation and trust.

1 Virtual “Work At Home” Career for 2009

If someone is talking about you behind your back at work, what do you do?

My boss at work has told me that a few people have stopped by his office and complained about me. I asked who they were and he would not tell me because they came by in complete confidence. I can guess who they are but really do not know how to proceed.

My critics told my boss I do not have a clue and have terrible interpersonal skills. This ended up in my performance appraisal. I am looking for advice!

I can not think of a situation where I am deserving of this criticism.
